“A big challenge”

Sebastian Hoeneß is expecting an intense game as VfB host SC Freiburg on Bundesliga Matchday 20.

There will be a hint of the UEFA Europa League in the air when VfB Stuttgart take on SC Freiburg on Bundesliga Matchday 20 at the MHP Arena on Sunday (kick-off 15:30 CET), with the two teams the only German representatives in the knockout rounds of the competition.

“We’re looking forward to the game and I’m sure the fans will create an impressive atmosphere again on Sunday,” said Sebastian Hoeneß in a nod to the astonishing tifo and atmosphere the red-and-white supporters produced during the dramatic 3-2 win over BSC Young Boys on Thursday evening.

Nine points apart

Hoeneß is anticipating another rigorous 90 minutes: “Matches against Freiburg are always a big challenge because they have a lot of individual quality and they’re very well-organised as a team.”

VfB go into the weekend fifth in the Bundesliga standings on 36 points, nine ahead of Sunday’s visitors in seventh. “We want to keep Freiburg at arm’s length in the table but we’ll need a top-class performance in order to do so,” said the 43-year-old.

That much is clear from the teams’ most recent meetings, as in the last 12 competitive encounters between them, VfB have won four to Freiburg’s eight.

The boys from Cannstatt are currently in fine form as they bid to buck that trend, though: Hoeneß’s men have won every Bundesliga game so far in 2026 aside from a 1-1 draw against Union Berlin.

Here’s to three more points for the home fans to cheer on Sunday!
