“Keen to get off to a good Bundesliga start”

Sebastian Hoeneß and his team are ready for the Bundesliga opener at 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon. Lorenz Assignon will miss the game due to suspension.

Saturday, 3:30pm, Bundesliga opening weekend, sold-out stadium – we’re all set! The anticipation is building as VfB prepare to battle for points for the first time in the 2025/26 season away to Union Berlin.

“We’re well prepared”

“It’s always difficult at Union: a sold-out stadium with fans who constantly push their team and have a good understanding of the game,” said Sebastian Hoeneß in his pre-match press conference. “The team rely a lot on physicality, second balls and set pieces, so for us it’s about being really alert and trying to keep them away from our goal and avoid dead-ball situations. We’re well prepared and have had a good week of training so far. We’ve got one more training session tomorrow. We’re keen to get off to a good Bundesliga start.”

Alexander Nübel is likely to start in goal

Hoeneß has almost a full squad to pick from for the trip to the capital. Leonidas Stergiou (building up fitness after foot operation) and Silas (rehab after ankle injury) are the only injury absentees, while Lorenz Assignon must serve a suspension carried over from the French league. Hoeneß confirmed that Alexander Nübel is likely to start in goal having trained the whole week, and returnee Tiago Tomas will also be part of the squad.
