Pre-match facts: VfB out to continue run

VfB Stuttgart return to Bundesliga action at 15:30 CEST on Saturday with a trip to VfL Wolfsburg, who will be looking to put their poor start to the season behind them against the Cannstatt boys.

Record against Wolfsburg:

Overall: 58 games – 26 wins, 9 draws, 23 defeats. 88:86 goal difference.

In the Bundesliga: 52 games – 21 wins, 8 draws, 23 defeats. 73:80 goal difference.

Looking back: Enthralling encounters last term

VfB and VfL Wolfsburg last met in February, when the Wolves managed to recover from Nick Woltemade’s second-half opener to earn a late 2-1 victory. Last season’s game in Wolfsburg finished 2-2, with Enzo Millot’s effort and a Deniz Undav strike deep in stoppage time salvaging a point for VfB after the Wolves had led on two occasions.

Back after just two months

Tiago Tomas returns to his former stomping ground on Saturday, having spent the previous two seasons with the Wolves before signing for VfB in the summer.

VfB out to build on strong start

Sebastian Hoeneß’s side have collected 12 points from their opening six games this term. Only once in the past 20 seasons have they had more points at this stage of a campaign – in 2023/24, when they picked up 15 points from their first six matches and went on to finish second. Having won their last three games on the trot, VfB are hoping to record four Bundesliga victories in a row for the first time since January – February 2024.

Wolfsburg longing for a home win

Wolfsburg are winless in their last 11 Bundesliga games on home soil (D7 L4), the longest run without a home victory in the league and an unwanted club record. The Wolves have only managed one Bundesliga win in front of their own fans in 2025 – a 5-1 triumph over Borussia Mönchengladbach in their first home game of the calendar year.

What the coaches say:

Sebastian Hoeneß: “Wolfsburg are a side with a lot of potential and a strong squad. They create a lot of good chances and their results have mostly been tight. We’re certainly not fooled by their current position in the table.”

Paul Simonis, VfL Wolfsburg head coach: “VfB have a strong team and are putting on consistent performances. It’s going to be a big test for us.”

Squad news: One striker sidelined, another returns

Hoeneß had more news on the personnel front, revealing that Deniz Undav is in contention for a place in the side after recovering from a tear to the medial collateral ligament in his knee. Finn Jeltsch is also available following his adductor injury.

Jamie Leweling is suffering from adductor issues of his own and will miss Saturday’s game, while Ermedin Demirovic and Stefan Drljaca are still sidelined. Defender Dan-Axel Zagadou is set to feature for the U21s in the 3. Liga as he steps up his return to fitness following injury.

3,200 Stuttgart fans in Wolfsburg

VfB will be backed by over 3,000 fans at the Volkswagen Arena. No tickets for the away end will be available on the day.
