Pre-match facts: VfB face Bayern in Supercup

VfB Stuttgart begin the new campaign against Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on Saturday evening (kick-off 20:30 CEST). Here are the pre-match facts on the clash between the DFB Cup holders and Bundesliga champions.

Record against Bayern: First Supercup meeting

Overall: 160 games. 37 wins, 29 draws, 94 defeats. 210:335 goal difference.

The teams have never met in the Supercup before, although they did face each other four times in the German Ligapokal – which featured six clubs – between 1997 and 2007. Bayern won three of those ties, with VfB triumphing once.

Third Supercup appearance

VfB are making their third Supercup appearance this weekend, having beaten Hannover 3-1 in 1992 and lost 4-3 to Bayer Leverkusen on penalties in 2024. Bayern, meanwhile, are appearing for the 18th time – more than any other side. They have won the cup on 10 occasions – a competition record – but lost 3-0 to RB Leipzig on their last appearance in August 2023.

Empty-handed in 2024/25

Bayern triumphed in both Bundesliga meetings with VfB last season, winning 4-0 in Munich and earning a 3-1 victory in the return game in Stuttgart.

Five straight wins?

VfB’s four successive victories at the end of the 2024/25 campaign is their second-longest winning streak under Sebastian Hoeneß, since a run of six consecutive wins between September and October 2023.

Personnel: Stergiou back in training

Leonidas Stergiou has been taking part in passing exercises after returning to training following a foot operation. Silas is still working his way back to fitness after his ankle injury, while Alexander Nübel is unavailable after hurting his elbow.

Bayern are without injured quintet Jamal Musiala, Paul Wanner, Alphonso Davies, Hiroki Ito and Aleksandar Pavlovic.

Attendance: The Franz Beckenbauer Supercup is sold out.
