Pre-match facts: VfB out to crash title party

Bayern Munich could be crowned Bundesliga champions on Sunday, but VfB are determined to throw a spanner in the celebrations. We look at the key facts and figures.

Looking back: Two years since last win over Bayern

VfB were beaten 5-0 in the corresponding fixture at the MHP Arena earlier this season. They were also narrowly beaten in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, going down 2-1 to Vincent Kompany’s side.

Sebastian Hoeneß’s troops also lost 4-0 in Munich and 3-1 in front of their own fans last term, with their most recent victory against the record titleholders coming nearly two years ago. On 4 May 2024, goals from Leonidas Stergiou, Wooyeong Jeong and Silas secured a 3-1 victory as VfB ended the season in second place.

Chasing records: Both sides enjoying superb campaign

With 56 points from 29 games so far, VfB are enjoying their third-most successful campaign since three points were first introduced for a win (they had 57 points in 2003/04 and 63 in 2023/24). Hoeneß’s charges have also picked up more victories after 29 matches this season (17) than in any other campaign apart from 2023/24 (20).

Bayern, meanwhile, have 76 points on the board so far, making this their third-best campaign after 2012/13 and 2013/14 (both 78). If the Bavarians better the result of closest pursuers Borussia Dortmund, who currently trail them by 12 points, they would clinch the Bundesliga crown for the 35th time. However, Bayern’s vastly superior goal difference (+78 compared to +31) means that victory on Sunday would all but guarantee the title for Kompany’s men.

VfB’s rock-solid defence: Meanest in the league since Matchday 18

Bayern, Stuttgart and RB Leipzig have all kept 11 clean sheets in the Bundesliga this season – only Dortmund have recorded more shut-outs this term (13). VfB, though, have conceded only 13 goals in the second half of the 2025/26 campaign, fewer than any other side in the division.

Goals galore on their travels: Best in Europe’s top five leagues

VfB have scored in each of their last 18 Bundesliga away games, equalling a club record from the 1984/85 campaign. They have already found the net more often on their travels (34 times) than in any other campaign – only Bayern have scored more goals away from home in Europe’s top five leagues (49).

Personnel: Just one absentee

Deniz Undav is the only player missing for VfB this weekend after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against Hamburger SV last time out.

Attendance Over 7,000 away fans in Munich

VfB will be backed by around 7,500 spectators at the Allianz Arena.
