He had a lot of fun at his photo shoot. When Lorenz Assignon discovered a VfB flag, he wanted to keep hold of it. The French full-back is buzzing with anticipation about his time in Stuttgart following his move from Rennes. After 98 competitive appearances for the club from Brittany, in which he registered seven goals and 11 assists, the 24-year-old is looking to take the next step in his career with VfB. Here’s his first interview as a Stuttgart player:
Lorenz, a warm welcome to VfB. How have the first few hours at your new club felt?
Lorenz Assignon: “It feels good to be here. I’m relishing the challenge that lies ahead of me and I’m really looking forward to it. VfB are a big club with amazing fans, I’ve watched a number of their games on TV. I want to play my part to continue the success of recent years.”
How would you describe your playing style to our fans? What are your characteristics as a full-back?
Lorenz Assignon: “I’m a full-back who, on the one hand, loves a tackle, and on the other hand, likes to get involved in the attacking play. I played as a forward for a long time as a youngster, so that attacking mindset is still in me. It was only later that I made the full-back position my own and I feel very comfortable there. I also try to help the team with my physicality and give everything for the success of the team.”
You know Ameen Al-Dakhil from your time at Burnley in England as well as Fabian Rieder and Anthony Rouault [who left VfB in the winter] from your time together at Rennes in France. Did you speak to them about VfB?
Lorenz Assignon: “Yes I did, I’m in particularly close contact with Anthony. He came to Rennes in the winter and we played a lot of games together in the time since. He said that VfB are a legendary club and that I can look forward to a magnificent atmosphere in the stadium. Fabian Rieder also said that the fans are really loud and create a great atmosphere. The Bundesliga fascinates me, too.”
What objectives have you set with VfB?
Lorenz Assignon: “First and foremost, I just want to help the team to succeed. That’s the most important thing. As well as that, I want to continue my development as a player, for which I see VfB as the ideal place. The team always look to play football, Sebastian Hoeneß has a very good reputation as a coach and has already taken several players to the next level.”
