“I’ve worked hard”

With the return of the German internationals to Stuttgart, attention is turning towards VfB’s next Bundesliga match at Freiburg. Jamie Leweling reflects in an interview on his comeback for the national team.

Following their call-ups, VfB’s internationals are arriving back at the club little by little. Jamie Leweling is one of those who’s back with the team after Germany completed their first two qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The winger joined the open training session on Tuesday morning as preparations got under way for the upcoming Bundesliga game at Freiburg, and spoke afterwards about the international break.

After Germany’s 2-0 defeat to Slovakia in their opening match last Thursday, Leweling played his part in ensuring that Julian Nagelsmann’s side bounced back with victory over Northern Ireland on Sunday evening (3-1), causing problems throughout on the right side of attack. “I wasn’t involved last time but I’ve worked hard in recent weeks and months to get back into the squad,” said the now three-time German international, who played the full 90 minutes against the Brits having watched the defeat to Slovakia from the bench. “We’re happy that we managed to win the game after it didn’t go well against Slovakia.” Now Leweling’s focus is back on the Bundesliga, though, where the next three points are at stake at SC Freiburg on Saturday afternoon. “I’m glad to be back with the team,” added the 24-year-old.
