Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “I think it was an even match. We had a slightly greater share of the play in the first half and then stepped up another gear after the break. It was important to press home the advantage after the equaliser and see it over the line. We opted for a fresh line-up after the long journey to Istanbul and it paid off. We’re glad about the win – hats off to my team.”
Deniz Undav: “It was a difficult, fiercely contested game. We knew we’d have to work very hard, keep closing down Mainz and at the same time be alert to their counter-attacks. The equaliser from Chris Führich was hugely important for us so that we didn’t go in behind at the break. We did well in the second half, had a good balance between activeness and patience. I’m pleased with my goal – especially as we won the match and got the next win.”
Mainz head coach Bo Henriksen: “Congratulations to VfB. I also think we saw an even match, which we should’ve ended with a point. We need to get this match out of our heads quickly and prepare for the match on Wednesday now. The fact we played against VfB today is a good basis.”
