“We were lacking that final punch”

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, Atakan Karazor and Angelo Stiller analyse the defeat against Fenerbahçe.

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “I think we can leave the stadium with our heads held high. We played with courage – just how we wanted to – but we need to talk about one incident: We were awarded a penalty [that was overturned] and there was clear contact. You can tell from Angelo Stiller’s ankle. We also had several chances in the second half but just couldn’t score. Overall, we couldn’t generate the momentum we’ve had in previous weeks. You can’t rely on getting points here at Fenerbahçe, but we definitely could have left with more. We still have every chance [of qualifying].”

Atakan Karazor: “Despite the defeat, we played well for long periods. We got into the final third on several occasions but weren’t clinical enough. At times, the final ball or bit of precision was missing. Fenerbahçe, on the other hand, defended their lead well. We tried hard and need to look forward now. We have two important games against Mainz coming up, and after that we’re desperate to pick up more points in the Europa League.”

Angelo Stiller: “In the end, it’s the little things that prove decisive. We actually played well – Fenerbahçe didn’t have many chances because our defending was good, for the most part. Once again, we were lacking that final punch and cutting edge. It was a tight game. In the end, it’s a shame we didn’t take any points.”
