“We didn’t kill the game off”

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, Atakan Karazor and Deniz Undav take stock of the 1-1 draw against Union Berlin.

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “Right now we’re disappointed with the result, but we can put the draw into perspective and accept it. Overall, we started the game well, had momentum and a few chances. Unfortunately we were too careless with them, even if we did manage to score the important opening goal. After that we weren’t able to keep our composure – the opposite was true, in fact, as the game remained wide open. Union showed how stable they are and why they’re having a good season.”

Atakan Karazor: “We could have got more from that game, so we’re disappointed right now. It’s very positive that we keep creating chances, but today we should have done better with a couple of our opportunities. We didn’t manage to kill the game off with a second goal. This match goes to show that we need to keep our focus at all times and until the very end. Overall, we’ve started well in the new year. We’re very ambitious and we want to show that in our coming games.”

Deniz Undav: “It was a tough and physical game. We improved in the second half, took the lead and had the scoreline we wanted. We actually defended well initially after taking the lead, but then we conceded the equaliser. That’s frustrating for us. We have to recognise that a draw is a fair result on the whole. We picked up seven points from our three games this week, which is good and sets the tone for the coming weeks.”
