Waldemar Anton departs VfB

The 27-year-old has agreed a move to Borussia Dortmund.

VfB Stuttgart and Waldemar Anton are going their separate ways after four years together. The defender, who was a cornerstone of the side last season with 33 Bundesliga appearances and four more in the DFB Cup, has joined Borussia Dortmund.

Anton was among the longest-serving players at VfB, and as captain of the team in 2023/24 he was a reliable presence in the back line. He made 127 Bundesliga appearances for VfB, scoring three times, as well as 12 DFB Cup outings (one goal) and two games in the relegation play-offs, taking his tally to 141 competitive games overall.

The centre-back developed into a senior Germany international at VfB and made his debut in March this year. He was part of Germany’s EURO 2024 squad, making two appearances to take his total number of caps to four.

VfB would like to wish Waldemar all the best for his future career.

VfB board member for sport Fabian Wohlgemuth: “Waldemar Anton was a reliable figure at VfB for many years. Waldi has been through highs and lows with us and has always identified with the club. His mentality and attitude have always been exemplary, which is why we had earmarked a central role for him in the team for the coming years. We extended his contract with that in mind, even if we were also aware that other clubs were very interested in him. Even though it is difficult, we have to accept that Waldi has now decided to leave VfB. We would like to say a big thank you to him for his commitment and the time we spent together.”

Waldemar Anton: “It’s not easy for me to leave VfB. I’ve felt at home here for four years, both on a sporting and personal level. I always threw myself into everything with passion, regardless of whether it was battling against relegation or fighting for Champions League qualification. I’d like to thank my team-mates, the coaching team, the backroom staff, the office staff and the fans for their support, especially when things weren’t going so well. I wish you all the best.”
