“It wasn’t a good performance from us”

Head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, Ermedin Demirovic and Angelo Stiller react to the defeat in Belgrade.

VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “It wasn’t a good performance from us, from front to back. We lacked precision in our play, never really got into a rhythm or took control, despite having a lot of possession. We slowed the tempo down at the wrong moments and sped it up at the wrong times too. We weren’t able to come out on top in lots of decisive tackles either. Our positioning wasn’t good when we lost possession and that played into the opposition’s hands. Today we missed a big opportunity to put ourselves in a better position in the Champions League table. After this game and this result, we’re now in a situation where we need to pick up points in all of our remaining games.”

Ermedin Demirovic: “We had our moments and managed to quiet the stadium down through our early goal and bring some calm to the game. But then we allowed them back in it by losing possession too often. If you make so many mistakes when you have the ball and are playing against a team that’s so good on the counter-attack, then this is the result you get. Today we were lacking conviction, the final ball and determination in all areas of the pitch.”

Angelo Stiller: “We didn’t play well today, and we made too many simple errors. Normally an early opening goal would galvanise us but that wasn’t the case today. We deserved to lose in the end. Now we have to draw a line under this game and win our next Champions League match at home.”
