“Build on it and keep going”

A full debut and three points: last Saturday couldn’t have gone better for Luca Jaquez. Now he wants to kick on with VfB.

Luca Jaquez can sum up his full debut with “4-3-3”. However, in this case that’s not a reference to the formation, but to a different list. VfB scored four goals at Bochum, earned three points and there were three Swiss players in the starting line-up. “It was a lot of fun, it was a perfect Saturday,” said Jaquez, whose compatriots Leonidas Stergiou and Fabian Rieder also contributed to the success.

The 4-0 win at the Ruhrstadion gives VfB a boost for the final stretch of the season, explained the centre-back: “It felt good on the pitch, the partnership with Jeff Chabot worked well, we came together well overall as a team and the two early goals obviously helped us.” The fact that his full debut ended after 74 minutes was related to his calf. “It was giving me a few problems from the 70th minute, but I feel good and fully fit again,” confirmed the 21-year-old.

Fans out in force

The fans who watched Wednesday morning’s open training session in the sunshine were able to see that as Jaquez took full par – in the centre of defence – in the duels and in build-up play. Together with the rest of the team, he wants to continue this upturn in form. “In the Bundesliga, for us it’s a case of building on this and keeping at it,” added the winter signing. “We want to carry forward the momentum from reaching the DFB Cup final and from the away win at Bochum. There’s a great sense of anticipation for Sunday.” That’s when VfB entertain Werder Bremen at the MHP Arena, with kick-off at 15:30 CEST.
