“It was a great game and one that we deserved to win. The lads totally believed that they were going to get the result from the first whistle to the last. We put so much into it and were ready for every situation. It was a really exciting match. The victory is one that will help us progress in our development. From the way that we played and the result, we know now that we’ll get our rewards if we’re ready to be fully committed and to stick to our plan.”

3 December, DFB Cup round of 16, Jahn Regensburg 0-3 VfB

“We approached this match exactly the way a favourite should in the DFB Cup. It was important to take the early chances that came our way and to get the game going in our favour. I wasn’t completely happy with the period before half-time – we weren’t ambitious enough. During the break, we told the lads to get the second half off to a good start and we did just that by scoring a third goal. We earned the win, and now we’ve got the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup to look forward to after the winter break – and we’re delighted with that.”

6 December, Bundesliga, VfB 3-2 Union Berlin

“Our first half was really bad. We had no courage, stayed back far too much and lost too many important one-on-ones. During the break, we decided that we were really going to step it up – and then we immediately went 2-0 down. And then after that, I have nothing but praise for my team. Getting it back to 2-1 and how we created that goal was really important for us. After that, we showed guts, passion and real heart. We played four games in ten days during that period and had to dig deep in our energy reserves, and I really want to congratulate the team on that. And of course, getting three points as a reward for our performance was great.”
