Poor start
Sebastian Hoeneß’s team were slow out of the starting blocks, while Young Boys were much more aggressive from the off, taking the lead in the sixth minute through Lukasz Lakomy.
Back on terms through Stiller
VfB gradually got themselves into the match via two decent chances for Ermedin Demirovic (9’, 22’), neither of which found the back of the net. Angelo Stiller showed him how it was done, however, getting the home side level in the 25th minute.
Impressive second half
After the break, Stuttgart ramped up the pressure on the Young Boys goal, and once Enzo Millot had given them the lead in the 53rd minute, the match was over as a contest. VfB took the game by the scruff of the neck, to the delight of the capacity crowd in the Arena Stuttgart.
Chris Führich scored a stunner (61’), with Vagnoman (66’) and Yannik Keitel (75’) giving the scoreline a more lopsided look and rounding off VfB’s first home win in this Champions League season.
Goals
6th minute 0-1: YB get off to the better start and use their press to open the scoring, with Lakomy finding the back of the net from distance.
25th minute 1-1: Angelo Stiller drives into the 18-yard box and plays a one-two with Josha Vagnoman before firing home a left-footed shot inside the near post from ten yards out.
53rd minute 2-1: Rieder gets the better of Joel Monteiro in the box and feeds Millot, who gives his side the lead from 12 yards out.
61st minute 3-1: A free-kick sees Rieder feed Führich from the right, and the winger curls a beauty into the right-hand corner from the edge of the box to make it 3-1.
66th minute 4-1: Excellent interplay between Führich, Millot and Keitel sees the ball end up with Vagnoman, who volleys home to make it a 4-1 lead.
75th minute 5-1: Rieder lays the ball off to Keitel, who finds the bottom left-hand corner from 25 yards out.
Special mentions
The 5-1 triumph over Young Boys Berne is VfB’s first home win in the UEFA Champions League in 5,481 days. The last time they tasted victory in Stuttgart in this particular competition was on 9 December 2009, in the group stages against Unirea Urziceni (3-1).
Angelo Stiller’s equaliser was his third goal in all competitions for VfB – one each in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup and now the Champions League.
Congratulations to Yannik Keitel, whose strike to make it 5-1 was his first-ever goal for VfB – what a way to end the match!
