VfB beaten despite fightback

VfB slipped to a 2-1 home reverse against a clinical Borussia Mönchengladbach side.

Match summary:

Sebastian Hoeneß’s side struggled to get into the game initially at the MHP Arena and it wasn’t until the 22nd minute that they created their first chance when Ermedin Demirovic narrowly missed the target with a header. Nathan Ngoumou showed him how it was done at the other end of the pitch a short while later, finishing from close range following a one-two with Julian Weigl. VfB lacked pace and purpose in attack and were unable to pull a goal back before the interval.

The scores were level early in the second half, however, when Jacob Bruun Larsen squared the ball into the box and Nico Elvedi slid in to inadvertently turn the ball into his own net (49’). Stuttgart tried to push for another, but a physical Gladbach side held their own in a hard-fought battle.

Gladbach take the points

VfB could have completed the comeback when substitute Chris Führich found himself one-on-one with Gladbach’s Moritz Nicolas, only for the visiting goalkeeper to come out on top (72’). Alexander Nübel was also required to make a fine stop when he produced a reaction save to deny Tim Kleindienst (74’). Hoeneß urged his side forward from the touchline, but it was Gladbach who scored again, Kleindienst tucking in what proved to be the winner late on (82’).

VfB subsequently threw everything forward in search of an equaliser but had an effort from Deniz Undav chalked off in stoppage time for offside, leaving them to nurse a narrow home defeat.

Matchday 20: VfB - Borussia M'gladbach

Goals:

25th minute: Gladbach’s Ngoumou plays a one-two with Weigl and finishes from the edge of the six-yard box, leaving Nübel no chance.

49th minute: Nick Woltemade sprints away from the visiting defence and passes to Bruun Larsen, who squares into the middle, where Elvedi redirects the ball into his own net.

82nd minute: Luca Netz beats Leonidas Stergiou to the ball and tees up Kleindienst for a simple finish to make it 2-1 to Gladbach.

Special mention:

Enzo Millot made his 100th competitive appearance for VfB, and 78th for the club in the Bundesliga.

It was a milestone occasion for Nübel as well as he brought up 50 Bundesliga matches for VfB.
