“We know what we’re up against”

Atakan Karazor and his teammates have started preparations for Saturday’s match at Mainz as they look to collect their first points on the road following two home wins.

It’s been a good start to the season for VfB with two wins from three games. What’s true of the team is also true of midfielder Atakan Karazor, whose good positional play and all-out running and tackling have helped the side to two clean sheets at home.

Karazor has won 28 challenges according to Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) statistics, with only Serhou Guirassy (31) boasting a higher figure for VfB. And it’s not just in defence that the 26-year-old is having an impact. With a pass completion rate of 89.26%, he’s regularly setting up his colleagues and has already provided two assists.

His stats so far in the new season are an indicator that the midfielder is becoming an increasingly important component of the VfB team. In the calendar year 2023, he’s started in 27 of 29 competitive matches for the Cannstatt club, missing one through suspension and being an unused substitute in the other. Karazor is looking to back up his good form again at 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday (kick-off 15:30 CEST). “We’ve started the week’s training well,” he said on Tuesday, adding: “We know what we’re up against, so we’d be well advised to prepare thoroughly. We want to show in Mainz that we’re not just strong at home but can also produce our energy on the pitch away from home.”
