“Focus, unity and heart”

VfB head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo spoke about the meeting with Bayern Munich on Saturday (kick-off 15:30 CEST), with 6,300 fans set to cheer the team on in Munich.

VfB head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo on:

…team news:
“Nikolas Nartey and Tanguy Coulibaly are still not yet back in full training – that’s going to take a while longer but they’re on the right track. Laurin Ulrich will return to light training next week. Josha Vagnoman and Luca Pfeiffer (both suspended) aren’t available.”

…the vacancy on the right side of defence:
“There are various options when it comes to replacing Josha Vagnoman on the right. Pascal Stenzel is one possibility, or we could go more attacking and play Chris Führich or Silas to add more pace.”

…their chances against Bayern:
“We’ve got the opportunity in Munich to show what we’re capable of – particularly with the focus, unity and heart we show on the pitch. If we play as a team and stand our ground, we’re capable of getting a result in Munich.”

…new recruit Serhou Guirassy:
“Serhou is making a good impression in training. He’s looking good and I think that he should be ready to play 60 minutes, which means he’s also an option for the starting XI.”

…his assessment of the first five games:
“Compared with last season, we’re defending in a different way and also operating differently on the counter. We’ve put more emphasis and value on defence, and that means that the chances and goals we create after getting possession back are also different – and I see it as progress. We’re always prepared to fight for every goal as a unit, even when we’re a man down.”
