Pre-match facts: VfB vs. RB Leipzig

Facts and figures on VfB’s 2022/23 Bundesliga opener against RB Leipzig at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Sunday (kick-off 15:30 CEST).

Record against Leipzig

Overall: 8 games, 0 wins, 1 draw, 7 defeats, 1:15 goal difference

In the Bundesliga: 8 games, 0 wins, 1 draw, 7 defeats, 1:15 goal difference

Looking back

VfB have picked up just the one point from the past eight meetings between the two teams – a goalless draw in March 2018 – with Leipzig winning the other seven. Steven Zuber scored VfB’s only goal in that run, finding the net in a 3-1 defeat on Matchday 22 of the 2018/19 campaign.

Three new faces each

Both sides have bolstered their ranks with three new signings. Janis Blaswich (from Heracles Almelo), Xaver Schlager (VfL Wolfsburg) and David Raum (TSG Hoffenheim) have joined Leipzig ahead of the new campaign, while Juan Perea (PAS Giannina), Josha Vagnoman (Hamburger SV) and Luca Pfeiffer (FC Midtjylland) will don VfB colours.

We meet again

Former VfB striker Mario Gomez has been Leipzig’s technical director since the beginning of the year. He scored 110 goals in 230 competitive appearances for the lads from Cannstatt before hanging up his boots in summer 2020.

VfB goalkeeper Fabian Bredlow, meanwhile, played for Leipzig’s Under-19s from 2012 to 2014. He made two appearances for Leipzig’s second team in the Sachsenliga (sixth division) in 2013, both games ending in victories.

Tickets still available

While over 45,000 tickets have been sold for VfB’s opening home game of the 2022/23 season on Sunday, a limited number are still available in various categories in the VfB online store.
