Pre-match facts: SV Werder Bremen vs. VfB

Facts and figures ahead of VfB’s first away match of the 2022/23 season on Saturday against newly promoted SV Werder Bremen. Kick-off at the Weserstadion is at 15:30 CEST.

Record against Werder

Overall: 110 games, 39 wins, 33 draws, 38 defeats, 167:185 goal difference.
In the Bundesliga: 106 games, 38 wins, 33 draws, 35 defeats, 165:179 goal difference.

Looking back

VfB are unbeaten in their last five meetings with Werder Bremen (W4 D1). The most recent Bundesliga matches between the clubs came in the 2020/21 season, with Stuttgart winning 1-0 at home thanks to a late own goal from Bremen’s Ludwig Augustinsson, and 2-1 away, Silas bagging his first Bundesliga brace in December 2020.

Bundesliga classic

In the words of Sasa Kalajdzic, this match is “nice for fans and neutrals alike“, and the history books bear him out. Both clubs were founding members of the Bundesliga and have won the German league on a number of occasions (VfB three times, Bremen four). Saturday will see their 107th meeting in the top flight.

Draws to kick off the season

Both teams head into Matchday 2 with a point to their names, having each overcome a 1-0 deficit on the opening weekend. Bremen turned the match around in Wolfsburg in the space of two minutes through goals from Niclas Füllkrug and Leonardo Bittencourt to lead 2-1, while it took a great defensive effort from VfB to hold onto a point against Leipzig after Naouirou Ahamada equalised to make it 1-1. Werder then conceded a leveller a few minutes before full time, Josuha Guilavogui scoring for Wolfsburg to make it 2-2.

Twin threat up front for Bremen

Werder had the best Bundesliga 2 attack last season, with Marvin Ducksch and Niclas Füllkrug involved in 29 of 33 goals in 2022. What worked in the second tier has been every bit as good in the top flight thus far, Füllkrug scoring the equaliser to make it 1-1 against Wolfsburg and Ducksch setting up Bremen’s second.

Support

Around 2,500 VfB fans will be at the Weserstadion to cheer on the lads from Cannstatt.
