“Want to put up a good fight”

VfB host Borussia Dortmund at a sold-out Mercedes-Benz Arena on Friday evening. The team want to pick up vital points in their battle for survival against their fancied opponents.

Pellegrino Matarazzo and his players are going into Friday night’s clash with Borussia Dortmund (20:30 CEST) in confident mood. “We’ve produced good to very good performances in recent weeks. That makes me optimistic that we can get the points we need in the remaining six matches to achieve our aim,” said the VfB head coach in Thursday’s press conference.

More important points are up for grabs against the Black and Yellows, but VfB are under no illusions about the size of the challenge against the team who are currently way out in second place. “They’re a side with great attacking quality,” described Matarazzo. However, the VfB boss also knows that it’s primarily down to his team as to whether they get a result or not. “We want to continue on our path of the last few weeks. That’s our motivation. If we play to our limit, we can also cause problems for the big boys. I’m looking forward to the game. We want to put up a good fight,” said the 44-year-old.

For this fight, Matarazzo will be without the suspended Waldemar Anton as well as Sasa Kalajdzic (coronavirus), Philipp Förster (fitness) and Daniel Didavi (light training). Borna Sosa has been back in full training since Tuesday following his adductor problem, though. “It’s looking good with him,” confirmed his coach.
