Off to a flying start

New recruit Florian Müller has had a positive start to the first week of pre-season training and is looking forward to the big new challenge that awaits him later this month.

The 23-year-old has made a total of 73 Bundesliga appearances, first for 1. FSV Mainz 05 and then 31 of them last season with SC Freiburg, keeping a clean sheet six times. Ahead of the 2021/22 season, the 1.90m keeper decided to make the move to VfB. “I was delighted when VfB showed an interest,” Müller said. “It’s a young and hungry team who have a playing style that fits with my own – I like to build up from the back with short passes of my own.”

As of Tuesday of last week, the off-season recruit has been training with his new team-mates and things seem to be off to a good start. “It only took a couple of days for us to see already what we were hoping to get out of him when we signed him,” said VfB sporting director Sven Mislintat.

For Müller, the next few weeks will see him in Tokyo rather than Stuttgart and taking part in the Olympic Games rather than pre-season training camp. “You only get a chance like this once in your life,” the goalkeeper said. “Going to the Olympics is such an incentive and I’m really grateful to VfB for allowing me to take this opportunity.”
