Emphatic win against Fürth

Pellegrino Matarazzo's team beat SpVgg Greuther Fürth 5-1 thanks to an accomplished performance all round.

VfB put in a superb team display to beat newly-promoted SpVgg Greuther Fürth 5-1 - thrilling their fans not just with the scoreline. Going forward, Matarazzo's charges played beautiful football from start to finish, and they gave away very little at the other end apart from the goal they conceded in stoppage time.

Goals:

30’: Philipp Förster is free in the box, and passes to Wataru Endo. The VfB captain scores for a deserved 1-0 lead!

36’: Mateo Klimowicz plays in the onrushing Philipp Klement, who shoots from an acute angle and doubles the lead to 2-0.

55’: Borna Sosa receives a short corner from Klement and crosses the ball into the penalty area, finding the head of Marc Oliver Kempf. No chance for Sascha Burchert in goal, and 3-0 to VfB!

61’: Sosa is allowed to cross unhindered from the left and Hamadi Al Ghaddioui, unmarked, heads in. 4-0!

76’: Sosa takes a corner and finds the head of Kempf. The defender scores for a second time and increases the lead to 5-0.

90’+3: Jamie Leweling is sent clear from midfield and rounds VfB goalkeeper Florian Müller before passing into an empty net.

Post-match reaction:

Pellegrino Matarazzo: "Except for the last ten minutes of the first half and the goal we conceded in injury time, it was a very good performance from the lads. We played well going forward and counter-pressed well. The injury to Mo Sankoh puts a dampener on our joy. It seems to be a knee ligament injury, so he may well be out for a long time. We hope he's back on his feet quickly."

Marc Oliver Kempf: "Of course it’s nice that we're able to celebrate this kind of win today. I think I've always been capable of scoring. It's all the better that I was able to get two goals today."

Wataru Endo: "I’m very happy with the win. I'm happy that our fans are back in the stadium. I've been waiting for this atmosphere for a long time."
