Pellegrino Matarazzo signs early contract extension

VfB have extended head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s contract until 30 June 2024. His original deal was due to expire on 30 June 2022.

The 43-year-old coach, who joined VfB from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on 30 December 2019, led the club from Bundesliga 2 back to the top flight during his first six months at the club. Twenty-one matches into his first Bundesliga campaign as head coach, Matarazzo’s side occupy 10th place with 26 points on the board.

“Rino” has taken charge of 41 VfB matches to date – 21 in the Bundesliga, 16 in Bundesliga 2 and four in the DFB Cup.

Thomas Hitzlsperger, CEO:

“We’re really pleased about the contract extension with Pellegrino Matarazzo. Rino has completely fulfilled our expectations from day one. He identifies with VfB and our chosen path of playing attractive and successful football with young and promising players.”

Sven Mislintat, VfB sporting director:

“People who watch VfB’s games can see how big a role Pellegrino Matarazzo’s work plays in enabling us to continue along our chosen path. Rino always comes up with good ideas for how to outplay opponents and is exceptional when it comes to developing our young prospects. We’re happy Rino has agreed to continue on this path with us until 2024.”

Pellegrino Matarazzo, VfB head coach:

“I’m very happy at VfB. With Thomas Hitzlsperger, Sven Mislintat and Markus Rüdt, we’ve sparked a very positive development. The work with the coaching staff, backroom staff and obviously with the players is a lot of fun. I thank the VfB hierarchy for their trust and am looking forward to the future.”
