Summary of the DFL’s extraordinary general meeting

At an extraordinary general meeting on Thursday, the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs came to an agreement on how to continue to deal with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. The following topics, among others, were discussed during the video call:

  • Agreement with media partners
  • Organisational concept for matches to be played behind closed doors
  • Preparation of a medical-hygiene concept by the task force for sports medicine / special match operations

By drawing up these organisational and medical proposals, the DFL members assembly intends to create a framework within which matches can be resumed in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2. An exact date for the resumption of matches has not yet been determined.

Thomas Hitzlsperger, CEO of VfB Stuttgart 1893 AG: "We emphasised multiple times how important the resumption of matches is from a financial point of view for the league and for every single club. In addition to the numerous requirements that the world of professional football needs to put in place in order for the season to continue, the most important thing is for politicians to make a positive decision while bearing in mind their responsibility towards society as a whole.

"If the season can be completed, it will only be under considerable limitations. The fact that matches will presumably have to be played behind closed doors for a long time is particularly painful for everyone involved. Unfortunately, however, there is no alternative without putting the livelihoods of a lot of clubs and employees at risk. In the event of a possible resumption of games, great importance has been attached in the planning to keeping the number of people involved as low as possible."
