The DFL have published the fixture list for the 2020/21 Bundesliga season, which begins on 18 September. VfB host Freiburg at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in their opening game, before travelling to 1. FSV Mainz 05 for their first away outing between 25 and 28 September.
VfB’s first competitive fixture of the campaign is actually one week before the Bundesliga kick-off, with the first round of the DFB Cup (11 to 14 September). Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side are away to the regional cup winners from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, who are still to be determined.
VfB sporting director Sven Mislintat: “Our excitement for the start of the Bundesliga was already very high, irrespective of the opening opponents. We now have a Baden-Württemberg derby against Freiburg, a side who had an excellent season and are not just physically very strong. They’ll present a very big challenge to our team.”
