Santiago Ascacibar leaves VfB

The Argentinian arrived at VfB in summer 2017 and made his Bundesliga debut away to Schalke on 10 September that year. He made a further 28 top-flight outings that season, as well as two in the DFB Cup. He scored his first competitive goal for VfB in the Bundesliga 2 encounter against Dynamo Dresden on 3 November 2019.

Overall Ascacibar, who also became a full Argentina international during his time in Stuttgart, made 57 Bundesliga appearances, 13 in Bundesliga 2 and four in the DFB Cup.

Sporting director Sven Mislintat: “We received several offers for Santi over the summer, so we expected there to be interest in him during the current transfer period too. He’s always played with great passion and commitment at VfB, even in times when his personal life wasn’t easy. At the start of the season we agreed with him that if an acceptable offer came in during the winter transfer window, then we’d be willing to enter into negotiations. After Hertha BSC made such an offer and Santi indicated that he’d like to move to Berlin, we found a solution that suits all parties. We thank Santi for his time here and wish him all the best for the future.”

Santiago Ascacibar: “I had two-and-a-half wonderful years at VfB. I felt very much at home in Stuttgart and got to know a lot of friendly people. I want to thank the fans, who always gave us fantastic support. I wish the club and the fans all the best for the future.”
