"We want to play attractive football"

On his first day on the job with the VfB Stuttgart first team, new head coach Tim Walter discussed his plans, his reasons for joining the club and his thoughts on the squad.

Tim Walter on…

the squad: "I've got a good impression of the team. For me it's important that we have players who identify with VfB and understand what the club stands for and what our plans are with them. Everyone who performs to their very best will have a chance of playing, and that goes for the whole squad, regardless of what any given player has done so far or how old he is."

his planned playing style: "Our aim is to be a team that sets the tone. We want to play bold, attractive football and be in control of the game at all times. We want to get forward quickly, but also want to defend aggressively."

his decision to join VfB: "I chose VfB, not a league. I’m proud to be here and I’m looking forward to a great challenge. Thomas Hitzlsperger and Sven Mislintat inspired me so much in our discussions. On top of that, the club's got such a great atmosphere that I agreed to come here, regardless of league status. I'd like us to develop something here together and to achieve the club's aims."

New faces on the coaching staff

Rainer Ulrich (70) and Michael Wimmer (39) will join Rainer Widmayer (52) as Walter's assistants. Athletics coach Martin Franz (37), who linked up with the first team at the end of last season, will continue in the same role this term, alongside fellow athletics coach Matthias Schiffers (37).

However, goalkeeping coach Marco Langner (50) has left the club. Under-21 goalkeeping coach Thomas Walter will take over provisionally until a replacement is appointed.
