Looking back
VfB will have positive memories of the last clash between the two sides. On matchday 12, the Cannstatt Boys secured a 2-1 win over the visitors from Dortmund in a capacity filled Mercedes-Benz Arena. The host’s goal-scorers were Chadrac Akolo and Josip Brekalo. Maximilian Philipp netted an intermittent equaliser for BVB.
On the run
VfB are now some eight games without defeat under Tayfun Korkut. With a ninth game undefeated since taking charge, Korkut would break the starting record set by Markus Babbel. During the 2008/2009, the VfB coach took his side on a nine-game unbeaten run to begin his term in charge: Curiously: Match number nine was a 2-1 win over Dortmund.
Drought
VfB’s last away victory in Dortmund dates back some eleven years. In the 2006/2007 season, the Wasenelf earned a 1-0 win in the Signal Iduna Park. The golden-goal was scored by none other than Mario Gomez. From their subsequent nine outings in Dortmund, VfB took just five points.
Reliable duo
Nine of VfB’s last eleven goals were scored by Mario Gomez (six) and Daniel Ginzcek (three). Aside from the strikers, there were also goals by Erik Thommy and Andreas Beck, who sat out a suspension as VfB drew 1-1 with HSV.
