When on Saturday afternoon at 15:30 CEST VfB take to the pitch against the all-time record holding and current champions FC Bayern Munich, it will be the 100th tradition-steeped South-German derby in the Bundesliga. In both the home and tables since the post-winter re-start, only the champions from Munich have claimed more points than VfB. In addition, Ron-Robert Zieler & Co (35 goals conceded) boast the second-best defence in the league behind Bayern (24 goals conceded). At home in Stuttgart, the Wasenelf have conceded less goals on their home turf than anyone else in the Bundesliga (9 goals).
No-one scores more often than Mario Gomez
VfB’s last win over Bayern was a 2-1 victory in Munich eight years ago. Curiously, Mario Gomez, with his five goals for VfB and eleven for FC Bayern is the second most prolific scorer for both sides in the long history of the South-German derby. Only VfB striker Fritz Walter (ten goals) and Bundesliga all-time record goal-scorer Gerd Müller (15 goals) have scored more often. We are looking back on some of the greatest moments from the VfB viewpoint at the previous 99 Bundesliga meetings between the two clubs.

30.04.1966 FC Bayern Munich – VfB 0-1
VfB’s first Bundesliga win against FC Bayern dates back to 30.04.1966. Following a handball in the box, Klaus-Dieter Sieloff fired Rudi Gutendorf’s sides first ever goal against Bayern, to earn the Cannstatt Boys an away victory.

06.08.1977 VfB – FC Bayern Munich 3-3
During the 3-3 draw in the Neckarstadion, 20-year-old Hansi Müller directly converted two penalties. His name-sake in the opposite team, Gerd Müller, also weighed in with a brace. Following 2-0 and 3-2 leads for VfB, Gerd Müller equalised in the 89th minute – much to the displeasure of the bulk of the 70,000 strong crowd. On the day, VfB’s Dieter Hoeneß clashed with his one-year older brother playing for Bayern - Uli Hoeneß.

14.11.1987 VfB – FC Bayern Munich 3-0
The side in the shirts with the infamous red hoop never achieved a higher victory over the all-time record title winners. The VfB eleven, with Eike Immel, Guido Buchwald, Günther Schäfer, Karl Allgöwer and Asgeir Sigurvinsson were instigators of one of the greatest triumphs over FC Bayern - not least as a then 23-year-old Jürgen Klinsmann fired VfB into a 1-0 lead with an impressive over-head kick. Subsequently, Fritz Walter and Jürgen Hartmann also got their names on the score-sheet. On that day, Jupp Heynckes was on the Bayern coaching bench.

09.09.2000 VfB – FC Bayern Munich 2-1
Under Ralf Rangnick, VfB won their third consecutive Bundesliga game against Bayern, with their then coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, achiving what still remains the longest run of VfB wins in the history of the South-German derby. Following an early lead for the visitors through Carsten Jancker, the Wasenelf turned the tie, with goals from Pablo Thiam and Krassimir Balakov.

21.04.2007 VfB – FC Bayern Munich 2-0
On matchday 30 of the championship winning season, VfB increased their lead over the chares from Munich to five points and thus defended third-place in the table. Cacau was on target with a quick brace against Oliver Kahn in the 23rd and 25th minutes. The team built around Thomas Hitzlsperger, Sami Khedira & Co. won each of their four remaining games and went on to take the title a month later.

10.11.2007 VfB – FC Bayern Munich 3-1
The next meeting between the two clubs in the following season was also decided deservedly in favour of Andreas Beck, Mario Gomez & Co. Gomez used a combination of head and knee to hand the hosts an early lead, before adding a second to make it 3-0 even before the half-time break.

27.03.2010 FC Bayern Munich – VfB 1:2
With a 2-1 victory in Munich, VfB celebrated their last win over the all-time record title holders and inflicted the first home defeat on FCB after 17 games without a loss in the Allianz Arena. Ivica Olic put Bayern in front on the half-hour mark, but thanks to an assist from Cacau, Christian Träsch levelled the scores before the break – the shot ricocheted off the back of then Bayern and now VfB defender Holger Badstuber before looping into the net. Not even the double-substitutions of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben could prevent VfB from turning the tie. Ciprian Marica benefitted from another assist by Cacau to head home the 2-1 winner.
