Josip Brekalo burst away, tumbling in delight and celebrated with his team mates: Shortly beforehand, in his second appearance in the VfB colours, the Croatian had fired a shot into the top corner of the opposition goal, thus securing his side three points. The incident occurred on February 17th, when the Cannstatt Boys earned a 2-1 win away to 1. FC Heidenheim.
As the goal was not only vitally important for VfB, but also a cracker into the bargain, those responsible for the television show 'ARD Sportschau' put the strike forward for 'Goal of the Month'. On Saturday, Josip Brekalo got to celebrate his goal once again, when ARD announced the results of the ballot in the month of February: The 18-year-old took 30,1% of the votes cast, putting him ahead of Arjen Robben (28,3 % /Bayern Munich), Fabian Schnellhardt (17,6 %/MSV Duisburg), Serdar Dursun (12,1 %/SpVgg Greuther Fürth) sowie Manuel Janzer (11,7 %/Holstein Kiel). Josip Brekalo is now the 15th VfB player to take the accolade.
