After falling behind to Franck Kessié’s 30th-minute goal, the Germans struggled for a long time against Côte d’Ivoire. However, the introduction of Stuttgart duo Deniz Undav and Jamie Leweling as well as Nadiem Amiri on the hour mark injected new life into Julian Nagelsmann’s team.
Undav outstanding
It took VfB striker Undav just eight minutes to level the score at 1-1 before he netted the winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time. After the final whistle, the match-winner said: “I’m over the moon. We’ve got three more points and I scored two goals.”
World Cup debut for Leweling
With his substitution, Leweling celebrated his World Cup debut and played his first 30 minutes for the national team at a major tournament.
Germany will be aiming to seal top spot in Group E in the final match against Ecuador on 25 June at 22:00 CEST.
