Germany’s build-up to this summer’s World Cup got off to a flying start on Sunday evening with a 4-0 win over Finland in Mainz. VfB striker Deniz Undav was on top form, scoring the first (34’) and the third goals (57’), and setting up the second for Florian Wirtz. He was substituted immediately after his second goal, with his side firmly in control. Angelo Stiller, Jamie Leweling and Alexander Nübel were unused substitutes on the night.
“I had my family in the stands and got three goal involvements – things could not have gone any better,” said Undav after the match. Germany’s next warm-up will be on Saturday 6 June against one of the World Cup hosts, USA.
Demirovic and Jaquez also in action
Two other VfB players were involved in World Cup preparations with their respective countries over the weekend. Luca Jaquez came on at half-time of Switzerland’s 4-1 win over Jordan, and Ermedin Demirovic also played the second half of Bosnia’s 0-0 draw with North Macedonia.
