After a series of impressive performances in the group stage, Japan and VfB captain Wataru Endo have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament. Endo was on the pitch for 72 minutes as the host nation beat France 4-0 in their third group game, setting up a last-eight meeting with New Zealand on Saturday (kick-off 11:00 CEST).
Germany and Florian Müller, however, are heading for home after a 1-1 draw with Côte d'Ivoire in their final group game left them third in the section. As in the previous two matches, VfB goalkeeper Müller played the full 90 minutes.
