Since this Monday, the players finally know whether or not they will be travelling to the World Cup in Russia with their respective nations. The national federations had to announce their official definitive squads to start the week. From Thursday, June 14th on, 32 national teams will do battle for the title in twelve different stadiums. Amongst the 736 players nominated for the finals, two are from VfB:
In Mario Gomez, there is a seasoned international in the German selection. The striker has made 74 appearances thus far for the DFB eleven, scoring 31 goals. The centre-forward was part of Germany’s 2010 World Cup squad, as well as the European Championship squads in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
For Benjamin Pavard, the World Cup in Russia is his first international tournament. Last November, the 22-year-old Frenchman celebrated his debut for the ‚Equipe Tricolore‘, during a 2-0 win over Wales and has won five caps for France in the meantime.
VfB Sporting Director Michael Reschke: "We are delighted that two of our players will be participating at the World Cup in Russia. It’s wonderful for the club and the players, who were rewarded for their efforts throughout the course of last season with a call-up. We will be keeping a close eye on how our lads get on in Russia and we wish them all the very best."
