Benjamin Pavard celebrates successful World Cup debut

At the World Cup in Russia, Benjamin Pavard, with EURO 2016 runner-up France, opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over Australia. On his World Cup debut, the VfB defender was in action at right-back over the full distance in coach Didier Deschamps‘ side.

In the opening game in Group C, France struggled to confirm their role as favourites in Kasan on Saturday afternoon. Underdogs Australia had the best chance of the first period, from a free-kick after 17 minutes. In the 58th minute, Antoine Griezmann converted a penalty to make it 1-0, after Joshua Risdon had brought down the French striker. Following a hand-ball by Samuel Umtiti, Mile Jedinak levelled from the penalty-spot for the Aussies. A chipped effort by Paul Pogba in the 81st minute made it 2-1 – which would prove the final score.

Benjamin Pavard and the French national team take on Peru on Thursday, June 21st (17:00 CEST), before finishing Group C with a clash against Denmark on Tuesday, June 26th (16:00 CEST). On Sunday evening (17:00 CEST), Benjamin Pavard‘s VfB team mate Mario Gomez begins the German World Cup defence against Mexico.
