With seven players away with their national teams, VfB played a home friendly on Wednesday afternoon against FC Zürich, currently second in the Swiss Super League. Florian Müller started in goal for the first time since being infected with coronavirus, while U19 player Alexis Tibidi made his starting debut with the first team.
VfB moved the ball around fluidly from the outset but, apart from Hiroki Ito’s header from a corner in the eighth minute, real goalscoring chances were in short supply.
The hosts started the second half well and continued to control possession. In the 70th minute, Philipp Förster charged through and set up Alou Kuol, who was denied by the Zürich goalkeeper. However, the 20-year-old did find the net in the last minute to hand VfB a 1-0 victory.
