Pellegrino Matarazzo’s charges got off to the perfect start in the game, with Phillip Förster breaking the deadlock in the fourth minute. Nicolas Gonzalez had a chance to double that lead on 11 minutes, but he saw his shot from a tight angle saved by the goalkeeper. The Argentinian forward did get on the scoresheet shortly afterwards, though, finishing into the corner following excellent interplay between Förster and Wataru Endo in midfield (16’). VfB remained on top for the rest of the half but were unable to add to the scoreline.
That soon changed early in the second period when Borna Sosa crossed from the left for Tanguy Coulibaly, and when the goalkeeper spilled the ball it fell to substitute Mario Gomez, who prodded over the line (53’). The Hungarian side reduced the deficit in the closing stages through a goal from Ivan Petriak (72’).
The victory was the Cannstatt boys’ second of their winter camp in Marbella, following their 2-0 triumph over Swiss outfit FC Basel on Monday. VfB’s ten-day trip to Spain ends on Sunday, when they return to Germany.
