After three days of intense training at their pre-season camp, the Cannstatt boys faced Swiss second-division side Winterthur in their latest friendly ahead of the new campaign. A VfB side featuring new signing Kalajdzic started brightly and almost took the lead when Daniel Didavi fired wide from distance, but Roman Buess eventually put Winterthur ahead on 29 minutes. Buess made it 2-0 from the penalty spot four minutes before the break, before Mario Gomez reduced the arrears on the stroke of half-time.
Ousmane Doumbia sealed the win for Winterthur mid-way through the second half, but VfB’s hard work in St. Gallen appears to be paying off. Walter’s side created several clear-cut goalscoring opportunities but were unable to add to Gomez’s strike.
