VfB head coach Tayfun Korkut and his side made use of the first international break of the season to participate in a friendly tournament (three games – each 45 minutes) in Aspach. Aside from the internationals away on duty with their respective nations, the 44-year-old coach was also without Marc Oliver Kempf (thigh muscle sinew tear) and Daniel Didavi (individual training programme).
Against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, including former VfB player Roberto Hilbert, the side in the shirts with the infamous hoop were dominant from the outset and controlled proceedings for the bulk of the tie. Mario Gomez got his side off to a good start, making it 1-0 after just 4 minutes and then adding a second on 28 minutes. The side from the Franken region reduced the deficit to 1-2 through Benedikt Kirsch, before VfB captain Christian Gentner got on the end of a corner from Dennis Aogo to make the final score in the first game 3-1 (44‘).
After third-flight SG Sonnenhof Großaspach opened with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Greuther Fürth, the Cannstatt Boys then took on the tournament hosts in the 'final'. SG Großaspach held their own for a long period and the ultimate outcome of the game remained open for much of the tie, until two quick goals from Erik Thommy (39‘) and Nicolás Gonzalez (42’) proved decisive. In the end, VfB finished their two halves of action with a deserved goal difference of 5-1.
VfB head coach Tayfun Korkut: "Little things, which can be improved upon, can always be found. However, most of what we saw today was exactly what we wanted to see. We won both games and our attackers scored. That is the bottom-line, that we will be taking from this friendly-tournament. We can continue to work on these things in the next week of training. We want to get our potent goal-scorers into threatening positions, which worked out for Mario, Nico, Erik and Christian today. Now we are looking ahead and want to prepare well for the game in Freiburg."
