VfB finished the first week of their pre-season preparations with a test friendly. The Cannstatt Boys boarded the new team bus on Sunday to make the short trip to Waldau, to take on Stuttgarter Kickers at the GAZi-Stadion. At 17:00 CET, VfB began their first test friendly of the summer preparations in front of a crowd of 6,100, with the Cannstatt Boys being led out by captain Daniel Ginczek on the day. The starting eleven also included new signings Orel Mangala and Anastasios Donis. Chadrac Akolo, who completed the move from FC Sion on Sunday afternoon, watched on as a spectator. The new man will travel to the training camp in Grassau with his new team mates on Monday. One notable absentee in the city derby was Simon Terodde, who was rested due to a muscular problem. The decision was taken merely as a precautionary measure.
Hannes Wolf didn’t get off to the start they had been hoping to, with Lukas Scepniak firing the ‚Regionalliga‘ (fourth division) side into the lead after five minutes. The Wasenelf then hit back twenty minutes later through new signing Anastasios Donis, scoring his first goal for VfB with a header in his first game in the shirt with the infamous red hoop (25'). VfB had their chances to go in front, but the sides went into the break locked at 1-1. To begin the second-half, Wolf made several changes (see "The VfB line-up"), introducing a number of individuals from VfB’s reserves, such as Niklas Sommer, Florian Kastenmeier and Hayk Galstyan. There were to be no further goals in the second period and the game ended with the score-line remaining at 1-1.
