Victory in Ingolstadt

On Thursday afternoon, VfB earned a 1-0 win in a test friendly clash with FC Ingolstadt 04.

On Thursday afternoon, head-coach Hannes Wolf and his men made use of the break in league action, for a round of international games, to play a test friendly against the 17th placed side from the Bundesliga. The first chance of the game fell to the hosts, with Lukas Hinterseer getting a shot away from close distance following a free-kick delivery, but VfB keeper Benjamin Uphoff reacted quickly to turn the ball away. The best chance of the first-half for the men in the shirts with the infamous red hoop came by way of Tobias Werner, who got on the end of a cross from Emiliano Insua to test FCI keeper Martin Hansen with a headed effort (30'). With both goalkeepers dealing with the challenges presented to them, the sides went into the break locked at 0-0.

To begin the second period, Matthias Zimmermann replaced Christian Gentner and the Cannstatt Boys started the half with a double-chance. First Daniel Ginczek hit the post, before seconds later Simon Terodde was denied by Ingolstadt keeper Martin Hansen (47'). A quarter-hour later, Alexandru Maxim tried his luck with a shot from the edge of the box, but fired over the crossbar (62'). VfB were eventually to reap the rewards of their efforts, when Tobias Werner pounced on an error in the opposition defence to put his side in front (73'). It was to prove the only goal of the afternoon, with the Wasenelf subsequently leaving the field of play as victors.

Hannes Wolf commented on the game: "We are satisfied with the match and with the result. It was an important test, especially for the players who hadn’t had much playing time of late. In the second-half we had clearer moves going forward than we did in the first. On the whole, it was a very open game. Ingolstadt are not just any opponent. They have a good team and it was great that we could use the international break to get in such a test."
