Triple success at Stuttgart sports awards

Stuttgart honoured its best sportspeople of the past year on Monday evening, with a number of athletes recognised for their performances throughout 2025. Track-and-field stars Sandrina Sprengel and Leo Neugebauer received awards, as did VfB’s professional footballers.

‘Sportswoman of the Year’ went to Sandrina Sprengel. The 22-year-old won the pentathlon at last year’s German Indoor Athletics Championships in Frankfurt and the heptathlon for the third time in a row at the German Athletics Championships. She took part in the World Athletics Championships for the first time in Tokyo in September, finishing fifth.

Neugebauer wins another award

Leo Neugebauer, who claimed gold in the decathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, won the ‘Stuttgart Sportsman of the Year’ award.

DFB Cup winners named ‘Stuttgart Team of the Year’

VfB’s footballers also took home some silverware. After their DFB Cup win in Berlin last May, head coach Sebastian Hoeneß’s side won ‘Stuttgart Team of the Year’. Club CEO Alexander Wehrle, board member for sport Fabian Wohlgemuth and sporting director Christian Gentner received the award on behalf of the team.

“It is a great honour for us at VfB Stuttgart that our men’s team and our finest male and female athletes were nominated once again this year and won three awards between them,” said Wehrle of the achievements. “It underlines just how exceptional VfB’s performances were in 2025, and at the same time, it gives extra motivation for all of us to maintain our levels of ambition and drive.”
