Ludovic Magnin’s numbers speak for themselves. During his time at VfB Stuttgart, the now 47-year-old made no fewer than 103 appearances in the Bundesliga, 10 in the DFB Cup, three in the UEFA Champions League, 11 in the UEFA Cup and, most importantly, lifted the Bundesliga title in 2007 as part of a side featuring current sporting director Christian Gentner, among others. “I’m fortunate to still be a part of the VfB family,” said Magnin, a highly regarded former left-back who wore Stuttgart colours between 2005 and 2010. VfB still holds a very special place in his heart – and the feeling is mutual.
Important to keep improving as a coach’
Magnin was relieved of his duties as FC Basel head coach in January 2026, but the ex-Switzerland international has been using the time since his departure to further his development as a tactician. “For a coach, it’s always important to gain new ideas, new inspiration and to keep improving,” said the former full-back, who has the perfect opportunity to do so this week as he follows current VfB boss Sebastian Hoeneß up close, giving him a glimpse of how the Cannstatt club go about their business. “It’s a special experience to spend so much time at VfB again after all these years and to be given a look behind the scenes – I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to visit,” he added.
‘Close the gap at the top’
The former Bundesliga champion is looking forward to Saturday’s primetime clash with Borussia Dortmund at the MHP Arena, which gets under way at 18:30 CEST. “It’s always special to face Dortmund,” said Magnin. “This is a chance for VfB to close the gap at the top of the league again.”
