The VfB Legends can feel rightly pleased with their third-place finish at the inaugural Beckenbauer Cup, pulling on the famous jersey once again in front of over 9,000 fans at Munich’s SAP Garden and helping to raise 75,000 euros for the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation. “We wanted to win the whole thing – that’s always our mindset, but it still ended up being really fun,” said captain Fernando Meira. “The organisers did a great job and there was a great atmosphere in the squad. We played some really attractive football.”
After kicking off with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of BVB, the VfB Legends then beat AC Milan 4-0 in their second group game. Real Madrid got the better of them on penalties after a 3-3 draw in the semi-final, but goals from Andreas Beck and Cacau enabled the Legends from Cannstatt to get their revenge over BVB, beating them 2-1 in the third-place play-off.
Bayern’s legends defeated Real Madrid in the final.

Magic triangle reunited
One of the highlights of the Beckenbauer Cup was seeing VfB’s ‘magic triangle’ of Fredi Bobic, Krassimir Balakov and Giovane Elber – who represented Bayern at the tournament – back together again. VfB CEO Alexander Wehrle and Chief Marketing and Sales Officer Rouven Kasper presented each of the trio with a Champions League jersey with the names of the three legends as a memento of the evening.
