The Mercedes-Benz Arena has become a building site, with work on the modernisation and reconstruction of the main stand beginning on time. Following extensive preparations in recent weeks, the ground was officially broken on Friday 3 June, marking the start of the renovation of the last old component, which is almost 50 years old.
VfB’s home stadium and venue for EURO 2024
The reconstruction is a significant project for the future of both VfB and the state capital of Stuttgart. “We’re making the stadium fit for UEFA EURO 2024,” highlighted Thomas Fuhrmann, mayor of Stuttgart.
Main building measures
With the renovation now underway, NeckarPark will become one of the most modern arenas in Europe and a top location for Baden-Württemberg. Under the new main stand, a new players’ wing will be built with modern dressing rooms and additional function rooms for the officials and the media, including a new press conference room and TV studios.
A central new feature is the "Tunnel Club" – an exclusive business area with views into and out on the match action and teams. Through glazed windows, around 200 guests can follow the players on their way from the dressing room to the pitch, among other things.
With a view to UEFA EURO 2024, the existing business area will be extended and enlarged. The accessibility of the main stand will improve significantly for fans and visitors.
Effects on VfB home matchdays
The building work will be carried out during the season, which will entail restrictions for teams, media and fans. In total, around 1,966 seats from the second tier and all 7,904 seats in the lower tier of the main stand will be removed.
Initial operation is planned for early December 2023, followed by normal match operations as a test period from January 2024. UEFA EURO 2024 takes place from 14 June to 14 July 2024.
