Happy birthday, Guido Buchwald!

VfB would like to congratulate their legendary playmaker on his birthday today!

In 1983, a 22-year-old Guido Buchwald moved from Stuttgarter Kickers to VfB. Right from the off, and for the following 11 seasons, the defensive midfielder was an integral part of the great success that the club enjoyed. At the end of his first season with the club, VfB won its first German league title in 35 years and the third in its history. Berlin-born Buchwald made a total of 325 Bundesliga appearances for VfB, scoring 28 goals, and featured in another 62 matches for the club in various competitions, finding the back of the net a further 17 times.

He was an incredible personality both on and off the pitch, proving his worth for VfB not only in the Bundesliga but also in the 1986 DFB Cup final and in the final of the UEFA Cup in 1989. Buchwald also won a total of 76 caps for Germany, with the highlight coming in 1990 when he rounded off an already amazing career by playing a significant role in his country’s World Cup win.

Two years later, he enjoyed his greatest domestic success, steering VfB to the title with a header in the 86th minute in the 2-1 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the final day of the season. Buchwald left VfB in 1994 and headed to Japan before finally hanging up his boots in 1999.

VfB Stuttgart would like to take the opportunity on his 60th birthday to thank Guido Buchwald for his passionate service to the club across no fewer than 387 appearances, as well as in his role as a member of the honorary and supervisory boards. We send him every good wish for his birthday, and above all the best of health.
