Challenge to finish off week’s training

VfB head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo provides an update on the structuring of training, the mood in the camp and the cross-group competitions.

The current situation is new for everyone, and requires a lot of creativity when it comes to organising training in order to work productively and keep the VfB players stimulated despite the restrictions. “It’s important we have a balance between fun and imparting information,” said Matarazzo. “Not everything is actionable but we’re trying to implement as much as possible.”

With the VfB squad still required to maintain distance from one another, it is still not possible for them to train with their teammates beyond the small groups or to be with them in the dressing room. Despite the distancing, the group dynamic is being fostered through ‘cross-group competitions’ such as Saturday’s stamina challenge.

The focus at the different stations was on “precise execution of exercises in a tired state”, explained Matarazzo, who is very happy with his players’ work in training. “The lads are coming to training with a smile on their face, they’re getting on with it and are focused.”

Sasa Kalajdzic and Co have a day off from training on Sunday before an online session via video conference on Monday. The next set of training at the VfB club centre starts on Tuesday 21 April.
