Following numerous stints at clubs both at home and abroad, Jens Lehmann arrived at VfB Stuttgart in 2008 having just helped Germany finish as runners-up at the European Championship. He seamlessly continued the top-class performances he had shown with the national team, and as first-choice custodian in 2008/09 he provided a solid foundation for VfB during a difficult season. As one of the side’s key members – Lehmann did not miss a single competitive game all term – he played a leading role in a successful conclusion to the campaign.
The following season Lehmann’s displays helped keep VfB on course and qualify for European competition once again, before he called time on a glittering career. However, almost a year later, at the age of 41, he came out of retirement to play for Arsenal once more.
As Lehmann celebrates his 50th birthday on Sunday, VfB Stuttgart wishes him all the best for the coming year.
