The two sides also locked horns on three occasions in the DFB Cup – all three matches in the ‘Round of 16’. Twice VfB came out on top (1937 and 2000), with Hannover progressing through to the next round in 1969.

Familiar faces

There are three individuals in the current VfB ranks who have prior connections with Hannover 96. Ron-Robert Zieler played for H96 between 2010 and 2016, with the 29-year-old making 185 Bundesliga appearances between the posts for Hannover. In addition, between 2011 and 2016, Zieler did not miss a single minute of top-flight action with the Lower Saxony club. Between 1999 and 2014, VfB assistant coach Steven Cherundolo was active for Hannover 96. The former US international is H96’s all-time record Bundesliga appearance maker, playing 302 Bundesliga games for Hannover. Tayfun Korkut was head coach in Hanover from January 2014 until April 2015 – taking his place on the side-lines for 46 Bundesliga games. In Takuma Asano, there is also a former VfB player in the Hannover 96 squad. The Japanese attacker made 41 appearances in the shirt with the infamous red hoop between 2016 and 2018, winning promotion to the Bundesliga with the Wasenelf in 2017.

Biggest home win and penalty record

In February 1986, VfB achieved the biggest home win in the club’s history, with the side in the shirts with the infamous hoop beating Hannover 96 7-0. Hat-trick scorer on the day: Michael Nushöhr. The then 23-year-old achieved something that day that has still never been repeated in the Bundesliga – all three of Nushöhr’s goals against Hannover were scored from the spot! Since then, no other player has ever scored three penalties in a Bundesliga match.
